Rome, Campari, and the Art of Starting Over

PLUS: Top 10 Bars in Rome for "Aperitivo" time (Cheat Sheet)

We were sitting on a rooftop overlooking Rome, my wife and I.

You know, the kind of view that makes your shoulders drop and your thoughts wander.

A few seats down, there was a man sitting unusually straight.

Not speaking.

Not scrolling.

Just staring at the city, Cinzano in hand, untouched. Minutes passed. Still staring.

It got a little… awkward.

Finally, I leaned over and said, “Man, are you okay?”

He blinked like someone coming out of a trance. Then smiled.

“Oh yes,” he said. “It’s just that… you know… this city feels like it was designed to seduce people into starting over.

That intrigued me.

He told us he’d quit his job a few weeks ago, booked a one-way ticket, no plan, and ended up here, sipping Campari under the Roman moon, wondering what came next.

And honestly? He wasn’t wrong.

Before it was an empire, Rome was a humble village that people couldn’t stop moving into. Before it fell, it stretched across three continents, powered not just by ambition but by an insatiable curiosity for what lay beyond.

Travel didn’t just happen in Rome; it was invented here.

The Romans gave us road networks, passports (yes, really), public baths, tour guides, souvenirs, and even the first travel reviews, carved into tavern walls with lines like:
“Here I got drunk. Here, I regretted it.”

So if you’re the kind of traveler who’s not chasing checklists, but chasing change…

Rome isn’t just a stop.

It’s a return to the source.

The new Four Seasons Cabo Del Sol (Website) just opened between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, and yes, it’s as dreamy as it sounds. The Savvy Traveler | Rome

A Perfect Roman Morning (Without the Crowds)

You wake up at Hotel Vilòn, a reimagined 16th-century palace tucked discreetly behind Via del Corso. The walls are velvet, the breakfast is artfully plated in a frescoed salon, and the terrace overlooks private Borghese gardens. It’s indulgent but never showy. Just how you like it.

Outside, the city hums awake.

First stop: Caffè Doria, the kind of place that makes you sit up straighter without even meaning to. Gilded frames line the walls. The coffee is strong, the cornetto is flaky, and the waiters look like they’ve been here since the Roman Republic.

You linger longer than planned. That’s the point.

From there, your driver drops you near Monti, Rome’s bohemian heart. It’s too early for the crowds, which means the boutiques are quiet and the stone alleys are yours. You pass shuttered trattorias prepping for lunch, a tiny perfumery older than your country, and eventually, a sunlit piazzetta that smells faintly of jasmine and warm stone.

As you circle back toward Regola, something in a window stops you mid-stride. Inside: Chez Dédé, part Parisian concept store, part Roman secret. Scarves, art prints, leather clutches, vintage books. It smells like old paper and sandalwood. You leave with something small and unnecessary. You’ll treasure it forever.

Before lunch, your guide leads you to one of those scenic terraces that somehow still isn’t on Instagram. You sip water from a centuries-old fountain and look out over terracotta rooftops and time itself. No ticket needed. No crowds. Just you and a view the emperors would’ve fought for.

By noon, you're in Testaccio, sliding into a shaded table at Taverna Volpetti. No menus here, just daily specials chalked on the wall and a quiet nod from the waiter that lets you know you’ve made the right choice. You order the cacio e pepe. Of course you do.

The afternoon?
That’s where the real magic begins…
